Why people call

  • We ask before we guess

Florida’s rules are not the same for construction, office work, and agriculture. This page is not a legal opinion.

  • Payroll is the rating base

Carriers rate the class of work and the payroll. A low guess on the application becomes an audit bill later.

  • Certificates for jobs

General contractors ask for proof. If we place the policy, asking for a certificate is normal.

What it covers

Workers’ compensation pays medical care and a portion of lost wages when an employee is hurt because of the job, under the policy and Florida law. It is not health insurance for the employee’s family. It is not general liability. A customer who is hurt is a different claim.

Carriers rate the class of work and the payroll. If the payroll on the application is low, the audit at the end of the term can send a bill. We would rather start with a realistic number.

Who needs it

Florida does not use one headcount for every business. Many non-construction employers look at coverage once they have four or more employees. Construction can require it with one worker. Agriculture uses a different count, with separate lines for regular and seasonal workers. Corporate officers can sometimes exempt themselves through the state. That filing is not something this office does for you. Confirm the rule that fits your trade before you rely on a sentence on a website. This page is not a legal opinion.

Call or text (321) 429-1182. Have a description of the work, the number of people you pay, and a rough payroll. If you use subcontractors, say so. Choose Workers' compensation on the quote form when this is the line you want.

A free quote is not a policy. Nothing on this page is a binder of coverage.

Questions people ask

Do I legally need workers’ compensation?

Maybe. Florida’s thresholds depend on the industry and the headcount. Construction is stricter than a typical office. We will ask what you do and who you pay. If an exemption is the question, confirm it with the state. We do not file exemptions, and this page is not legal advice.

I use 1099 subcontractors. Do they count?

They might. A carrier audit can treat some contractors as employees if the facts look like employment, and a general contractor can be responsible for an uninsured sub’s injured worker. Bring the list. Do not assume a 1099 form ends the question.

What is an experience mod?

A factor, used on many larger accounts, that compares your claims with similar businesses. It can raise or lower the premium. Smaller accounts may not have one. We use the mod the bureau or the carrier has. We do not invent one.

What happens at the audit?

The carrier checks the payroll you actually paid. If it was higher than the estimate, you get a bill. If it was lower, you may get a return. Guessing low on the application does not save money. It moves the bill to the end of the year.

Does this cover me if I have no employees?

A sole proprietor with no employees often is not required to buy a policy, and a policy may not cover the owner unless you elect coverage. Construction rules are different. Tell us if you are the only worker and what the trade is.

My employee was hurt. Is that a general liability claim?

No. On-the-job injuries to employees belong on the workers’ compensation policy. General liability is for other people. Call us and we will tell you which carrier to report it to. Do not wait to see if it gets worse.

Can you cover work outside Florida?

Only if the policy allows that state. Tell us if your crew leaves Florida. A Florida policy is not a blank check for a job in another state.

Is the quote free?

Yes. There is no broker fee to compare workers’ compensation options. The premium is what the carrier files for your class and payroll.
